(Siegen 1577–1640 Antwerp)
The Crucifixion,
oil on canvas, 109 x 84 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, United Kingdom, since 2005
Peter Paul Rubens painted many versions of the Crucifixion, the most famous being that of circa 1613, now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp (inv. no. 313). Another version hung above the door of the sacristy in the city’s now-defunct Recollects Convent and is currently conserved in the Bob Jones’s Museum of Art, Greenville, North Carolina. The present lot may have enjoyed a similarly significant placement in an ecclesiastical setting.
Rubens’s depiction of a partially planed tree trunk for the Cross draws on German pictorial traditions, while the head of Christ appears influenced by antique statuary, particularly the Laocoön group, which he drew whilst in Rome.
