A very important cylinder desk,
design based on the 18th century secretary in the V & A Museum, superbly reproduced by PAUL SORMANI son in around 1900, freestanding hardwood frame on gently curved legs, mahogany veneered, marquetried with several precious woods in panels and bands, lavish garlands of flowers and vedute, numerous marquetry depictions in the form of allegories, slightly convex sides, the writing surface extending synchronously with cylindrical cover, the 5 interior drawers with partly dyed floral marquetry on the front in so-called ‘sans traverse’ execution, gold-embossed leather writing surface, below a drawer marquetried with vedute on the front and with floral marquetry on the sides, in the middle hinged top with internal mirror, decorated with an allegory of music, vase motifs on the sides, c. 105 x 83 x 51 cm, ornamented with partly figural bronze mounts, very well-kept condition.
