Attributed to Erasmus Grasser (1445 - 1518 Munich), Saint Sebastian,
c. 1490, the saint depicted in a rare enthroned posture, his right leg turned back, his left leg crossed in the front and turned to the side, the cape draped over it with deeply carved folds, carved lime wood, the reverse flattened, polychrome painted and gilt, 43 x 91 cm, some age-related damage as well as paint damage, his left arm missing, (MC)
The throne motif is rare in the iconography of St. Sebastian, who is usually depicted in a standing position, tied to a tree. From a stylistic point of view, the “dancing” leg position is typical of Erasmus Grasser and can be compared with the enthroned Saint in the shrine of the St. Achatius altar executed by Grasser in Reimchersdorf, or the Christ of the Angel Pietà in the Diocesan Museum in Freising. Certificate by Dr. Leo Andergassen 2007. Literature: R. Eikelmann and C. Kürzeder (ed.): Bewegte Zeiten, Der Bildhauer Erasmus Grasser (um 1450 - 1518), 2018, pp. 278f. and 292f.;
