Attributed to Johann Peter Schwanthaler (Ried i. I. 1720 - 1795), a pair of worshipping angels, - Works of Art - Furniture, Sculptures, Glass and Porcelain

Upper Austria, c. 1770-80, carved lime wood, hollowed out on the back, polychrome paint and gilding of a later date, height 80 cm, the fingers partially damaged, (MC)

Cf:
Helga Achleitner, Johann Peter Schwanthaler der Ältere, Ried 1991, p. 46f. Not only the face type but also the typical elongated, diamond-shaped wrinkles suggest an attribution to Johann Peter Schwanthaler. There is, however, also an angel by his brother Johann Ferdinand Schwanthaler (born in 1722) - to whom otherwise not many works can be undisputedly attributed - which bears close resemblance to the present item. Cf: Die Bildhauerfamilie Schwanthaler:1633 - 1848, Ausstellung des Landes Oberösterreich 1974, ill. 65;

Provenance:
Private Collection Upper Austria, 1968 - 2013 Capuchin Church, Braunau am Inn (made redundant).
