porcelain, the body with gold and red edge, decorated with raised and gilt borders with ovals, beaded strip and chain frieze on gold and light purple ground, 5 reserves with delicate gold acanthus leaf twigs with fluttering birds, floral cornucopias and covered vases on cobalt blue ground, 5 medallions with gold vase motifs on royal blue ground, the well with polychrome painted depiction, inscribed on the reverse, dia 24.3 cm, Vienna, Imperial Manufactory, underglaze blue Austrian shield, dated 1818, turner no. 46 Leopold Schneider 1802-1839, paintwork of a later date (Ru)
Saul, the first king of Israel until about 1004 B.C., belonged to the tribe of Benjamin, he was the military leader of the Israelites in the battles against the Philistines, Ammonites and Amalekites and thus defended his people’s claims on cultivated land.
