Lot No. 18

Tunic,

Tunic, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

probably Egypt? (Northeast Africa), c. 53 x 94 cm (frame c. 72.5 x 112.5 cm), 7th to 11th centuries, a short-sleeved linen shirt in plain weave, unpatterned, in heavily fragmented condition. Its origin can no longer be determined with certainty without a region-specific design. Furthermore, radiocarbon dating would be necessary in order to establish the present specimen’s age. The time span indicated above is based on the study of comparable pieces. The tunic is covered with Quranic verses in black Arabic script. Some of these have faded and are barely legible. One surah reads: “Allah. There is no god but He, the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth.” These verses were used by the followers of Islam as an apotropaic or healing symbol on jewellery or clothes and could have been worn on this tunic during a pilgrimage. Furthermore, due to its damaged condition, it can also be assumed that this piece was used under knightly chainmail. Currently attached to a covered wooden board with pins, a glass frame would be worthwhile for better presentation and further conservation.
