A study for the painting The Miracles of Saint Anthony of Padova in the church San Rocco in Venice (1734), black and white chalk, on greyish prepared laid paper, inscribed “Trevisani” in pen and brown ink, 18,5 x 25 cm, mounted, unframed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Collection Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome.
Literature:
F. Di penico, Francesco Trevisani, Eighteenth-Century Painter in Rome. A Catalogue Raisonné, Washington D. C. 1977, Cat. 113, p. 70, Fig. 93; G. Sestieri, Il “Francesco Trevisani”. Recensione alla monografia di F. Di penico, in: Antologia di Belle Arti, 1st Dezember 1977, pp. 372-379, S. 376, fig. 8; H. Voss, Die Malerei des Barock in Rom, 1924, 618.
The present drawing is a detail study for the painting „The Miracles of Saint Anthony of Padova“ in the church San Rocco in Venice (Oil on canvas, 419,5 x 167,5 cm), which was finished by Trevisani in 1734, when the artist was already 78 years old. Other paintings for that church were executed by Sebstiano Ricci („Saint Francis Restoring a Child to Life“; „Saint Helen and the True Cross“) and by Francesco Solimena („The Annunciation“). The study represents the figure of a young man in the painting whose foot was cut off due to an accident and re-attached to the leg by the saint. A bozzetto for the painting (oil on canvas, 76,5 x 38,5 cm), once in Dresden (Inv. 1754, n. 437) was destroyed in February 1945 (compare Voss 1924, 618).
We are grateful to Dr. Karin Wolfe for the confirmation of the attribution and the scientific support.
