Kopf Ludwig Schames, 1918, woodcut on blotting paper with blindstamp ASOKA, vertically signed E L Kirchner, from the edition of between 120 and 180, image size 56.8 x 24.8/25.5 cm, sheet size 57.3 x 44.5 cm, hand-printed by the artist after a commission from the “Vereinigung für Neue Kunst”/Frankfurt am Main and published as annual edition (Jahresgabe) for the members of the “Vereinigung”, Dube H 330 II (of III), Gercken 896 II (of III).
One of the most fascinating graphic portraits of German Expressionism. For Kirchner it was a great effort to print this edition. Usually he printed small editions up to a dozen copies. In addition his printing press was still in Berlin and he had to print the woodblock rubbing it by hand.
