Joël Stein attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and Fernand Léger’s atelier. From 1956 onwards, he worked on geometric compositions, which follow a mathematical programme; in 1959 he produced his first manipulable reliefs. Co-founder of GRAV, he was interested in sensory stimulation; in 1962 he studied the chromatic polarisation of light that led him to create the “boîtes lumineuses” known as Polascopes. He then turned to the kinetic and interactive object; he created the Tourne-disques, Trièdres, Kaléidoscopes. Fascinated by new technologies, in 1968 he had already added the laser to his expressive means.
