Circle of Jacob Jordaens
(Antwerp 1593–1678)
A jester holding a cat,
oil on canvas, 103 x 85 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium
The present picture shows a grinning man in the costume of a sot, or Jester, with physiognomy typical of the characters used by Jordaens for the artist’s many-figured compositions of well-to-do Antwerp domestic revelry. Invented in the 1630s and 1640s, the most famous of these are the several versions Le Roi Boit (one of which is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, inv. no. 786) depicting the roles played by banqueters at the annual Feast of the Epiphany, on the Twelfth night after Christmas. Drawn by lot, the king would chair the merrymaking, while other revelers would be designated the parts of doctor, servant, or as here, that of the sot. This figure of the jester, with his attendant cat under his arm, proved popular, and was treated separately by Jordaens and his studio, as well as sometimes being depicted accompanied by a woman, and often looking through a window.
