Alessandro Piazza

Alessandro Piazza - Old Master Paintings

(Venice 1652/1665–1727 Rome)
Ceremony of the Agnus Dei celebrated by Pope Clemens XI,
inscribed lower right: BENEDICTIO ET SACRATIO / SOLEMNIS CERAE PAPALIS / AGNORUM DEI;
oil on canvas, 120.5 x 170 cm, framed

The present painting depicts the pontifical blessing of the Agnus Dei, a solemn ceremony which took place in Rome during the Holy Week. It was conducted by the pope, usually in the Clementine Hall in Vatican, in the first year of a new pontificate and then repeated every seven years and during the Holy Years.

The present painting shows Clemens XI (1649-1721), at the centre of the scene, assisted by cardinals, drawing out from a basin of water representations of the Agni Dei, which were then laid down on trays. The Agni Dei were ovoid wax disks, which were solemnly distributed on Saturday following Easter.

Given that Piazza arrived in Rome around 1700, the painting may refer to the second ceremony of the Agnus Dei celebrated by Clemens XI, in 1707, suggesting a possible execution date towards 1710.
