Tapestry, France, c. 440 x 280 cm,

Tapestry, France, c. 440 x 280 cm, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

France, c. 440 x 280 cm, 19th century. A cross-woven tapestry manufactured after Charles le Brun’s painting “Entry of Alexander into Babylon”. After being introduced to the royal court in around 1660,Le Brun was commissioned to produce a series of paintings from the life of Alexander for the king. Thus began his meteoric rise at the royal court, which led him him, among other things, to the post of director of the “Manufacture Royale des Tapisseries et Meubles de la Couronne”. Therefore, the origin of the tapestry in the royal workshops is obvious. This important tapestry is in good condition, with partly replaced outer border and probably slightly trimmed left side, only minor professional repairs and no appreciable damage. Entirely draped on linen. (VP)
