Ando Hiroshige
(Japan 1797-1858) Meisho Edo hyakkei (Hundred Views of Edo), sheet title (in a square cartouche, left of the series title cartouche): "Mokubo-ji Uchigawa Gozensaihata (Mokubo Temple by the Uchi River, Gozensaihata), nishiki-e (coloured woodblock print), signature (lower left in red longitudinal cartouche): "Hiroshige ga" (drawn by Hiroshige), censor seal (upper right margin, round): aratame, date seal (left of the censor seal, oval): snake 12 (1857), publisher’s seal (lower left): Shitaya Uo(ya) Ei(kichi). The series consists of 120 sheets, with the title page added at at a later date and a replaced scene. Compared to the first impression, the present sheet displays a lack of dark blue bokashi in the water around the bank in the foreground on the right handside. The two women’s garments were also printed without bokashi technique. In the sheet title cartouche the printed bicolour clouds in bokashi technique are also missing. The colours used are of lower quality than those in the first impression. The margins around the red-ground cartouches are heavily eroded and the colour blocks appear to have shrunk due to heavy use. The page displays full margins. For a comparison with the first print, see: Malanie Trede and Lorenz Bichler: Hiroshige. Meisho Edo hyakkei, Cologne, Taschen Verlag 2015, ill. 92; 35.8 x 24.3 (sheet size), mounted, framed, (CT) We are grateful to Gordon Friese for his certificate dated 11.11.2019
