A large “STACK” Table, breadedEscalope

A large “STACK” Table, breadedEscalope - Design

(Sascha Mikel - Martin Schnabl - Michael Tatschl), Austria 2018, solid larch, aluminium cast, stainless steel screws, brand mark, all with inscription and date: breadedEscalope 2018, brand mark: BREADEDESCALOPE, height c. 80 cm, c. 420 x 115 cm. (DRAX)

A unique piece. With certificate.

“STACK” is a functional arrangement of freshly cut lumber. The metal legs allow to store the finished wood in the form of a bench or table. During the drying process the boards and planks can be used as furniture.

“STACK” was originally developed for Schloss Hollenegg for Design in 2017 as part of a residency on the theme of legacy. The project is based on the rediscovered writings of the world traveller Heinrich von Liechtenstein, who brought back a redwood seedling from his journey and had it planted at the castle at the end of the 1860s. Since the tree died after being struck by lightning several years ago, it was felled and used for the project. The aim was to consolidate its role as a witness of the family history, in memory of the many generations that grew up in its presence in the middle of the family estate over many years. By simply stacking the material in a functional way, the tree takes on a new role, in the form of a table, on the estate. At the same time, it also becomes the meeting point of the family. It is also possible to remove individual elements from the stack at a later date and use them for future projects, without impairing the table’s functionality. Thus, the tree’s history perpetuates itself.

“STACK” design is reproducible and is understood as a ritual. Its constructive core elements are cast metal struts. They are complemented by a tree, which adds conceptual value to the structure. The present object on offer is made of larch wood, in keeping with the material used for the floor of the breadedEscalope studio in Vienna. The metal struts in the breadedEscalope design are from the first series.
