Giovanni Battista Gaulli
(Genova 1639–1709 Rome)
An allegory of the papacy, pen and brown ink, brown wash, heightened with white, on blue paper, 19,4 x 15,5 cm, laid down on an old mount, inscribed “Ottavio Leoni / ex coll. Aosta” and numbered “24” on the reverse, mounted, framed, (Sch)
Provenance:
Auction sale Christie’s, London, 26th November 1974, lot 46;
Auction sale Christie’s, London, 2nd July 2019, lot 49.
The present drawing was identified by Francesco Petrucci as an allegory of the papacy and may have been executed between 1680 and 1690 in preparation for a graphic illustration. The rider on horseback could represent the Roman soldier Longinus who is drawn against a landscape with the Temple of Jerusalem. In the 17th century the adoration of Longinus had a revival in Rome as becomes for example evident in Bernini‘s monumental sculpture in the north-eastern niche of St. Peter’s basilica in Rome (1629–38).
The attribution of the drawing to Giovanni Battista Gaulli was confirmed by Prof. Francesco Petrucci on the basis of a high resolution digital photograph.
