Lot No. 119

Rembrandt school, 1660–1670

Rembrandt school, 1660–1670 - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

Jacob’s Dream, pen brown ink, black and grey wash, on laid paper, with the fragment of a watermark “shield with crown on top”, inscribed “G. VE.” at lower left margin by a later hand, 14 x 18,3 cm, framing lines in pen and brown ink, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Private collection, Netherlands.

The present drawing is related to the painting „Jacob’s Dream“ by Gerbrand van den Eeckhout (1642) in the National Museum, in Warsaw. The sheet could have been executed in preparation for another version of and after the painting. The monogram “G. VE.” may have been added by a later hand, the drawing may go back to a design by van den Eeckhout. The artist dedicated himself to the theme in 1652 again, when he depicted the composition in upright format. The painting is kept in the collection of Dr. A. Bader in Milwaukee (Oil on canvas, 117 x 100 cm); two preliminary drawings are preserved in the Staatliche Museum, Schwerin (black chalk, 26,1 x 20 cm, Inv. Hz 4486) and in the Albertina in Vienna (red chalk, 26,5 x 20,3 cm, Inv. 9549).
