Lot No. 876

A Pair of Rare Round Stools,

A Pair of Rare Round Stools, - Furniture, Porcelain, Sculpture and Works of Art

third quarter of the 19th century, carved and gilt wooden support in the shape of cords with 5 knots, upholstery of a later date, height c. 44 cm, well-kept condition with slight signs of wear. (DOC)

The preset stool, based on the shape of a rope, was designed by A. M. E. FOURNIER, who inspired the glass manufacturer BACCARAT to apply this decor to glass seats. The analogue model of a chair was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867. This design embodies the preference for soft padding, draperies and tassels that prevailed in the third quarter of the 19th century. The designer went a step further by imitating the then ubiquitous decorative cords, creating an amusing and interesting piece of furniture.
