“Rebecca at the Well”, - Furniture, Porcelain, Sculpture and Works of Art

engraved on the base: C. B. IVES, FECIT. ROMAE. 1864, white marble, naturalistically sculpted in the round, in the form of a girl with water jug by a fountain, height c. 110 cm, well-kept condition with minor chipping. (DOC)

This masterpiece, created several times in Rome by the American sculptor CHAUNCEY BRADLEY IVES (1810 - 1894), was highly popular in his time. The present specimen is two years older than the one exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. C. B. IVES came to Europe from Connecticut (USA) in 1844, settling in Rome from 1851 until the end of his life. He created important marble statues of American politicians from the 18th century, including Senator Roger Sherman, whose work is in the National Statuary Hall Collection on the Capitol in Washington D.C. Many of Ives’ works contain a reference to biblical figures. The present one refers to Rebecca at the well from the Book of Genesis.
