Micro-mosaics have been known as an art form since antiquity. Their technique was revived for decorative objects at the end of the 18th century. Popular motifs were mostly based on antique models. Italy was the creative centre for micro-mosaics until well into the 19th century. Items of the highest quality were produced by famous names such as Castellani, G. Melillo, Guiliano, Pierret and Fontenay.
