Marcus Pernhart - 19th Century Paintings

(Untermieger 1824–1871 St. Ruprecht near Klagenfurt)
Lake Wörthersee, A Fishing Hut, titled on an old label on the reverse “Gegend am Wörthersee”, oil on canvas, 52 x 66 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection Corinthia

Markus Pernhart was an Austrian landscape painter who is known for the great many depictions of Carinthia he created. Pernhart originally came from Grafenstein and studied under Eduard Ritter von Moro (1793 - 1846) in Klagenfurt. Since Moro himself had been a student of Franz von Steinfeld (1787 - 1868), the influence and legacy of both painters can be seen throughout Pernhart’s oeuvre. His first success was his album of 198 depictions of Carinthia’s landmarks, commissioned by the entrepreneur Max von Moro (1817 - 1899). After he had sent several paintings to the monthly exhibition held by the Austrian Artists’ Association, he quickly attracted the attention of Empress Elisabeth, who added a selection of 31 of his drawings of Carinthia’s major landmarks and one of his paintings of the Grossglockner to her collection.
