Ippolito Caffi

Ippolito Caffi - 19th Century Paintings

(Belluno 1809–1866 Lissa)
Rome, The Pantheon, signed, dated Caffi. 1843, oil on canvas, 30 x 42 cm, framed

Provenance:
Christie’s Rome, 5 December 1995, lot 608;
acquired from the above by the owner’s father,
by inheritance to the current owner, Private Collection Italy.

The present painting depicts the Piazza della Rotonda in Rome with the Pantheon. It was commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Emperor Augustus and was later rebuilt by the Emperor Hadrian circa 126 AD. Originally a Roman temple, it has been used as a Catholic church since the seventh century. The two campanili erected in the 17th century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and removed in the late 19th century can be seen on the portico of the Pantheon. In the centre of the piazza there is a fountain surmounted by an Egyptian obelisk. The fountain was constructed by Giacomo della Porta under Pope Gregory XIII in 1575 and the obelisk was added in 1711 under Pope Clement XI. The present work is typical of Caffi’s meticulous observation of architecture. It was in Rome that Caffi developed his own personal style working en plein air. The scene is bathed in afternoon light.
