The Master of the Parrot

The Master of the Parrot - Old Master Paintings

(Antwerp active 1520–30)
The Virgin and Child seated before a ledge,
oil on panel, 47.5 x 33 cm, framed

The present panel of the Virgin and Child seated before a ledge is characteristic of the oeuvre of the Master of the Parrot, a close-knit workshop whose style, was first identified by Max Friedlander in 1948, while the real names of the artists therein remain unknown. As was common practice in Antwerp and Bruges, where models and motifs were interpreted and adapted by different workshops, the present composition may have originated with Quentin Massys, and is known in a number of versions, all of which differ in quality and most of which appear to be by different hands. The present panel appears to be derived from the version in Basel, Burckhardt-Bachofen collection. The majority of the versions, as here, include the ledge laid with cherries and other fruit. Other versions may include the figure of St. Joseph and a landscape or, as in the current work, a window in the background. The design was also used by Jan Gossaert, as exemplified his Holy Family, today conserved in Houston, Museum of Fine Arts.
