The present arresting and acutely observed composition is evocative of similar scenes for which the Antwerp painter Sebastian Vrancx was celebrated. In addition to being captain of the Antwerp militia, Vrancx’s works exhibit his sensibilities both as a landscape painter and his ability to capture both human and animal movements. The same sense of pathos and suffering conveyed by the current panel suggests its painter was a member of Vrancx’s own extended military and artistic circle.
