Andrea Lanzani

Andrea Lanzani - Old Master Paintings

(Milan 1641–1712)
Saint Ursula,
oil on canvas, 99.5 x 79 cm, framed

We are grateful to Mauro Lucco for suggesting the attribution and his help in cataloguing this work.

This painting shows the typical smooth, graphic and luminous finish of Andrea Lanzani’s work. He may have acquired these stylistic traits in Rome, where he arrived in late 1674 and came into contact with Ciro Ferri and Carlo Maratti.

The present painting can be compared to the Martyrdom of Saint Christina which is signed and dated 1693 and conserved in the church of San Pietro at Varallo Pombia (see S. Colombo/M. Dell’Omo, Andrea Lanzani, 1641-1712. Protagonista del Barocchetto lombardo, Milan 2007, p. 159, cat. 36). The same pose was also used for one of the wet-nurses represented in the Birth of San Carlo in the Palazzo Borromeo all’Isola Bella (op. cit. Colombo/Dell’Omo, 2007, pl. XXIV).
