We are grateful to Helmut Börsch-Supan for endorsing the attribution of the present painting to Georges Desmarées. A written certificate is available.
Börsch-Supan writes: ‘I estimate the sitter’s age to be around 50 or 60 years. The letter he is reading does not seem to be an official document but appears to be a private one. The special role the portrait plays within Desmarée’s oeuvre rests on the fact that, despite its dignity, it also radiates warmth and thus betrays the painter’s modesty and noblesse for which he was praised by his contemporaries’.
