Since the early 1970s, German painter, sculptor and photographer Günther Förg has produced an extensive body of work. Förg engaged with the legacy of 20th-century avant-garde movements against the general trend of figurative painting that was predominant in Germany in the 80s.
Ranging from sculpted heads through abstract painting to architectural photography, much of Förg’s work displays a preoccupation with processes of fragmentation and visual or physical resistance. Universal concepts of form, mass, proportion, rhythm and structure (as in the present work) constitute a common thread in his work. Günther Förg had an intuitive approach to colour and composition, constantly renewing his artistic practice. His spontaneity of conception and dynamic gesture is contrasted with complex references and their associated meanings.
