Katushika Hokusai

Katushika Hokusai - Asian Art, Works of Art and Furniture

(1760-1849) "Sôshrokkei" (Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, series title at top in vertical cartouche), nishiki-e (coloured woodblock print), signed: zen Hokusai Iitsu hitsu (also transcribed as: saki no hokusai Iitsu hitsu). The signature is located to the left of the series and picture title cartouche. Censor seal (round, lower right): kiwame, publisher’s seal (under the censor seal): Eijudô (Nishimuraya Yohachi), c. 1832. According to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, 24 July 2020, the present sheet is an impression from the original woodblocks. All the lines of the black plate match those of originals of undisputed authenticity. Later editions do not show any censor or publisher’s seal, whereas they are visible on this sheet. The colours are good, albeit faded. The print condition is satisfactory (losses to the horizontal cloud lines at the far left; loss to the top of Mount Fuji; blurred printing at the lower edge of the cartouche). The sheet shows stains, especially a brownish stain to the middle of the picture. A diagonal line to the left of the boat is not original. Further stains can be seen in the water left and right. A stain to a section of the front house to the left of the stone lantern is not original. The sheet has a vertical centre crease. The sheet is trimmed, attached to support, mounted, 24 x 36.6 cm, (CT)
