Jehiryusai Hiroshige

Jehiryusai Hiroshige - Asian Art, Works of Art and Furniture

(1797-1858) Ommaya-gashi (Ommaya Riverbank, sheet title (left near the series title cartouche in square cartouche), from the series: "Meisho Edo hyakkei" (Hundred Views of Edo, series title in the upper right in red longitudinal cartouche), nishiki-e (coloured woodblock print), signature (lower right in red longitudinal cartouche): Hiroshige ga, censor seal (at upper outer margin on the right, round): aratame, date seal (left next to the censor seal, oval): snake 12 (1857), publisher’s seal (bottom left): Shitaya Uo(ya) Ei(kichi). The series consists of 120 sheets, with the title page added at at a later date and a replaced scene. In Gordon Friese’s opinion (Dortmund, 22 July 2020), the present sheet made available to him as a photograph was printed from the original woodblocks (a wood grain can be seen in the sky, which also occurs in original prints). Compared to the first print, the present sheet lacks the bokashi on the rear bank, under the boat, on the women’s headscarf, on the hill and on the stone wall on the right hand side. The first print had a three-coloured sheet title cartouche (here monochromatic), a darker sky (scene at dusk) and partly different and more numerous colours. The colours used are of lower quality than those in the first impression and are slightly faded. The sheet displays almost full margins. Staple holes are visible along the outer margin, slightly browned. For a comparison with a first impression, see: Fine Arts Museum San Francisco No. 1959-12-31, attached to support, mounted, 36.7 x 25.1 cm (sheet size), (CT)
