portrait of the old emperor in Austrian field marshal’s uniform, decorated with the Order of the Golden Fleece, the sash and the breast star of the English Order of the Garter, oil on canvas, signed and dated "Sieg. L'Allemand 1905", 78 x 62 cm, carved gilt wooden frame with emperor’s monogram "FJI", overall dimensions 118 x 102 cm, (Lu)

A superb portrait of the emperor by the Viennese court painter Siegmund L'Allemand. Emperor Francis Joseph I received the Order of the Garter from Queen Victoria in 1867. The present painting was probably intended for King Edward VII’s closed circle. King Edward VII visited Emperor Francis Joseph I several times, also in 1905 in Bad Ischl.
