Lot No. 242

Emperor Charles I of Austria - a mixed lot

Emperor Charles I of Austria - a mixed lot - Imperial Court Memorabilia and Historical Objects

photographs of the Imperial couple’s journey to Sofia and Constantinople in May 1918, 37 photographs, all with format 17.5 x 13 cm, all with stamp of the Chamber photographer ‘Brüder Schuhmann Wien’ on the reverse, including a typewritten list with a detailed description of each photograph, 1918, (Lu)

An extremely interesting photo series of the imperial couple’s visit to Sofia and Constantinople in May 1918. The photographs were taken by the court and chamber photographer Brüder Schuhmann, who accompanied them on their journey. The present series was then sent to the Emperor’s Lord Chamberlain’s Office, with the task of deciding which photos were intended for publication and which were not. For this reason, this original first series contains partly unpublished material. The photo series documents, among other things, the splendour of the Ottoman court shortly before the end of the World War I.

Provenance:
Emperor Charles I and heirs.
