Johann Georg Ziesenis the Younger was active as a painter at the electoral court of Brunswick from 1760 onwards. In 1763, he painted a portrait of King Frederick II of Prussia on behalf of his sister, Duchess Philippine Charlotte of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. He executed many copies and variants of this well-known portrait. In 1764, for example, he supplied Count Heinrich Ernst zu Stolberg-Werningerode with an extended version of the king’s portrait that included the knees. The present portrait comes from the Royal House of Hanover. It was offered and sold at the well-known auction at Marienburg Castle.
