Caucasus, c. 256 x 187 cm, 19th century. A subgroup of the Sevan Kazak carpets are the shield Kasaks, so called because of their imposing Maltese-like shield motif, which usually takes up the entire ground, as in the present example. The bright central field features an eight-pointed star with stylised animal heads. This archaic collector’s carpet from the area around Lake Sevan is completely original and largely preserved with deep pile. The shiny wool of the pile is evenly patinated and partly corroded. (VP)
