Marasali, East Caucasus, c. 142 x 123 cm,
East Caucasus, c. 142 x 123 cm, 19th century. Prayer rugs, such as the present one, are attributed to the village of Marasali and are now rare. The central field features an arrangement of botehs in different variations with a simple gable, surrounded by a typical main border with geometric abstract decor. Its broad format suggests an early origin. (VP)
Cf.
Doris Eder, Kaukasische Teppiche, Munich 1985, ill. 23.
