Meshed Saber, Iran, c. 521 x 392 cm,
Iran, c. 521 x 392 cm, about 1940. Abbas Quli Saber (1911-1977) began his career as an apprentice in Amoghli’s workshop. When Saber set up his own workshop, he continued the craftsmanship already established by Amogli, eventually taking it to new heights in terms of technique and a new pattern canon. The vast majority of his carpets display the traditionally dark, strong Mashhad colours. This carpet distinguishes itself by virtue of its unusual teal-blue central field. The present specimen was probably a special commission for an affluent house of the Persian aristocracty. Manufactured with c. 500,000 knots/sqm on fine cotton warp and signed "Saber". In excellent state of preservation. (VP)
