Iran, c. 200 x 137 cm, 19th century. A high quality rug from the "Kajarian carpet renaissance" of the 19th century. With a central medallion and detailed, colourful animal motifs gathered around four ramified trees of life on an ivory ground. The spandrels of the central field feature lions biting dragons (representing evil). The upper section with short pile in places. The edges have been re-worked. (VP)
