Lot No. 32

Flemish Artist active in Prague, first quarter of the 17th Century

Flemish Artist active in Prague, first quarter of the 17th Century - Old Master Paintings

A market in a busy town with an extensive landscape beyond,
oil on panel, 31 x 45 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Luxembourg

The present panel is an intriguing testament to the artistic exchange between Flanders and Rudolphine Prague in the first quarter of the seventeenth century. While the palette of the picture, with the saturated tones of its figures’ costumes, speaks to a Praguian hand in the manner of Hans Rottenhammer (1564–1625), the foliage and serpentine trees that frame the composition to the left and the right are painted in a style more consistent with a Flemish-rendered landscapes. The support, of beech wood, would point towards the picture being executed in Prague, as oak would have been a more usual choice in Flanders. The question of who painted this vibrant fair scene remains open, but it appears to be from the hand of a Fleming working in Prague in the early 1600s.
