Pieter Schoubroeck was one of the most important artists from the School of Frankenthal. He was trained by Roment Verbiest in Mechelen (1583). In 1595 Schoubroeck travelled to Rome where he got into contact with Paul Bril and Jan Brueghel I. His artistic production was strongly influenced by these two artists. The present scene of elegant figures reveling and dancing amidst a village fairs shows the German artist’s reception of the Flemish Kermesse genre. The School of Frankenthal constitutes a group of sixteenth century landscape artists, mainly of forest scenes, who lived in Frankenthal in the Palatinate. In 1562 the Elector Palatine, Friedrich III, established the village as a place for protestant refugees from the Netherlands, Gillis van Coninxloo was the most famous among them, settling there from 1588-1595.
