Bartolomeo Ligozzi
(Verona 1620–1695 Florence)
Flowers in sculpted vases,
oil on canvas, each 52 x 39 cm, framed, a pair (2)
We are grateful to Alberto Cottino for confirming the attribution of the present painting and for his help in cataloguing this lot.
In the present paintings flowers, including hyacinths, tulips, anemones, carnations and other species are represented with great attention to botanical detail. The motif of the vase with putti riding dolphins is recurrent and appears, for example, in the Still-life with a tortoise, squirrel and an India piglet in the Museo della Natura Morta in Poggio a Caiano. The rendering of the flowers can be compared to those in the paintings Flowers, fruit and a parrot (inv. no. 1774) and Flowers in a glass vase (inv. no. 560) datable to between 1688 and 1692; the same period as the present paintings according to Cottino.
Bartolomeo Ligozzi was a specialist painter of fruit and flower compositions; he enjoyed a successful career at the court of Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici: among his patrons, Cardinal Carlo de’ Medici commissioned an important series of flower paintings from him.
