Lot No. 188 -

Tuscan School, late 16th Century

Portrait of Jacopo Pitti (1519-1589) standing, three-quarter length, in the robes of a Florentine senator, beside a table with a bell with the coat-of-arms of the Pitti family,
oil on canvas, 119.5 x 85 cm, framed

Jacopo Pitti was a member of the illustrious Florentine family and was appointed a senator in 1568. The coat-of-arms on the bell are of the Pitti family.

The features and the cut of the senator’s beard in the present painting can be compared to those of Jacopo Pitti in the posthumous portrait painted by Giovan Battista Mossi in 1596 for the series of lieutenants of the Accademia del Disegno (Florence, Uffizi Gallery, inv. 1890, no. 2412), in which he is depicted at an advanced age, with a white beard and hair.

It has been tentatively suggested that the present work many be one of the earliest portraits by Jacopo di Chimenti da Empoli (1551-1641), comparable to that of the donor in the Annunciation with Saints Francis of Assisi and Michael the Archangel, in the church of Sasseta di Vernio.
