(Antwerp 1626–1678)
A basket with flowers, a bird and a butterfly nearby,
oil on copper, 15.5 x 20.6 cm, framed
Klaus Ertz confirmed the present painting as an autograph work by Jan van Kessel I. A written certificate (February 2020) is available.
Klaus Ertz writes: ‘Although the model for this flower basket derives from his great-grandfather Jan Brueghel the Elder, this still life is an entirely autonomous and typical composition by van Kessel. In addition to the outstanding painterly quality and the diversity of the blossoms, which are described down to the tiniest detail (particularly the tulips are of an exceptional beauty), the work stands out for such animals as the bird and the butterfly, which cannot be found in the pictures of his prominent role model. […] Van Kessel made a great name for himself alongside the Brueghels as a painter of flowers, animals and especially insects.’
