Lot No. 245

School of Antwerp, 17th Century

School of Antwerp, 17th Century - Old Master Paintings

The Virgin and Child with Angels in a landscape,
oil on canvas, 115 x 148 cm, framed

Provenance:
The Falcontinnenklooster of Augustinian Canonesses, Antwerp, until 1810;
Private collection, Belgium

The present picture shows the enduring influence of Peter Paul Rubens’s on Antwerp painting in the mid-seventeenth century, and in particular his reception of Adam Elsheimer’s nocturnal scenes, along the chubby physiognomy of Rubens’s putti, which are echoed in the current work. The figural groupings in the present work appear to be the invention of the painter of this canvas, but the overall compositional scheme may relate to Chistoffel Jegher’s chiaroscuro woodcut after Rubens’s The Rest on the Flight into Egypt conserved in the Detroit Institute of Arts (inv. no. 09.1S633).

The present canvas hung in the Falcon convent in Antwerp, so named for Falco de Lampagne, the thirteenth century director of the Antwerp Mint, which was torn down in 1810. All that remains today is the gate of 1671 which still stands on the Falconplein.
