Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, was a hero of the Seven Years’ War. Portrayed by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1757, Spencer died the next year on campaign near Emden.
The portraitist John Jackson RA (1778–1831) belonged to the generation of Royal Academicians that came after Reynolds, the academy’s founder.
