Lot No. 45

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) - Asiatics, Works of Art and furniture

Nagato, Shimonoseki (in yellow longitudinal cartouche to the left of the series title cartouche), from the series: “Rokuj meisho zu” (Famous Views of the 60-odd Provinces), nishiki-e, signature: Hiroshige ga (in red longitudinal cartouche to the lower left of the sheet), publisher Koshi Hei (Koshimuraya Heisuke, in oval cartouche to the lower left of the sheet), censor's seal aratame, date seal (dragon 3=1856). In Gordon Friese’s opinion, the present sheet made available to him as a photograph was printed from the original woodblocks at a slightly later date. The typical wood grain (in the sky) at the top right of the image indicates the use of the same woodblocks. The first print (to be seen in the collection of Gerhard Pulverer in: Marjie Jansen "Hiroshige’s journey in the 60-odd provinces, Amsterdam 2004, p. 147), shows the following differences to the present sheet: the water plate was not cut out under the publisher's seal, the leaf cartouche has three colours, the water changes from blue to a white stripe towards the horizon, bokashi below the ferry boat. The present sheet has been trimmed to the border line, with loss of the censor seal and date seal. Colours and impression are good, minimally creased, attached to support on the reverse at the upper corners, 34.2 x 22.6 cm, mounted, (CT)
