Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Numazu (in red cartouche), "tasogare" (in twilight),
from the series: "Tôkaidô gojûsan tsugi no uchi" (The 53 Stations of Tôkaidô), publisher's seal (red, below the signature): Hôeidô (Take no uchi Magohachi), censor seal (in the left outer margin): kiwame, dated c. 1833-34.
According to Gordon Friese, Dortmund, the present woodcut is an impression from the original woodblocks. All lines match those of known originals. The sheet is faded, and this is especially visible in the people in the foreground. Overall, however, this is hardly noticeable because blue and grey tones predominate, which are resistant to light damage. The group of trees on the left displays crackling horizontal stripes. The print is still good overall. The lines are slightly wide. At the upper left the blue protrudes over the border, which occurs with somewhat later impressions, full margins.
This motif is the only moon sheet in the series.
