(1751-1818)
Portrait of Marie Francoise de Baudry, Comtesse Esterhazy-Galantha Forchtenstein as goddess Hebe, watercolour on ivory, 7 x 5,5 cm, framed, (Hu)

Subject to species protection (ASA).

Marie Francoise de Baudry was born in 1776 in Douai, a small Northern French town near todays Belgian border. In 1799 she married Count Miklos (Nikolaus) Maria Janos Esterhazy de Galantha (1775- 1856). The Countess is represented as Goddess Hebe. Hebe was the daughter of Zeus and Hera. She was the cupbearer of the gods, her attribute is the goblet, her father is symbolyzed in the miniature by the eagle. The portrait was executed around the mid-1790s before the wedding with Count Nikolaus Esterhazy-Galantha. Portraits of sitters disguised in an ancient dress were popular in Classicism. Many members of the Esterhazy family were executed by Füger, who was then the best portrait painter which is proved by several portraits which he executed for Count Johann Baptist Esterhazy (Robert Keil, Heinrich Friedrich Füger, Vienna 2009, p. 304, WV 300, 331, 414).
