Lot No. 371

Carl Franz Bauer *

(Vienna 1879-1954)
Caricature of the Austrian Derby 1949: the winner Pfälzer Wald and its jockey, titled, signed and dated "I hab mir für's Derby an Dienstmann engagiert" (“I engaged a commissionnaire for the derby”), C. F. Bauer 1949, mixed media on cardboard, 30 x 24 cm, framed, (Hu)

On June 5, 1949 the Vienna derby in the Freudenau was won by the German stallion Pfälzerwald (GER), br. H: 1946, the spring from v. Cirano (GER) a.d. Pfalzgräfin (GER) (Oleander). It was considered a great success for the Austrians because the stallion was in fact breeded in Germany but was owned by the Austrian stud Haidhof. The Austrian jockey Josef „Joschi“ Schejbal (1898-1957) became legendary because he had already won the Austrian derby of 1937 and of 1938. He continued his success with his victories of the derbies in 1950 and 1953. Grinzinger being ridden by the amateur jockey Hans Trunk was a three-year old white-horse stallion (of unknown descendance), which won the Medoc-Handicap, which was the last race on derby day of 1949.
