Sevan Kazak,
Southwest Caucasus, c. 233 x 163 cm, 19th century. Carpets with Sevan designs can be divided into several pattern groups. The present item belongs to the rarest type. The design itself, a large shield shape, goes back to early 15th and 16th century carpets now thought to have originated in East Anatolia. With a thin pile, especially along the borders, various repairs and a heavily corroded brown, in original condition. (VP)
