Luigi Querena
(Venice 1824–1890)
Venice, the Santa Marta Church at Sunset, signed, dated Luigi Querena 1859, oil on canvas, 53 x 64 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private Collection, Italy.
Exhibited:
Stra (Venice), Villa Pisani, Ottocento Veneziano, 28 March - 26 September 2010.
Catalogued and illustrated in:
Exhibition catalogue, Myriam Zerbi, Ottocento Veneziano, Allemandi ed., Turin, 2010, p. 59, no. 32.
The thrid view shows the Church of Santa Marta with its bell tower at sunset. The church was located on a little promontory at the southwesternmost tip of Venice, on the Canale della Giudecca.
The church was built in the 14th Century, including a convent and a hospital, and was deconsecrated in 1811. It was later used as a warehouse and progressively fell into a state of disrepair. Querena shows an ascending row of houses, culminating with the church and a couple of figures entering the building. The peacefulness of this view, along with the warm colours of the sunset, are very much in the Venetian tradition. The artist focuses on the depiction of light, water and its reflections, along with the source of light in the church.
