(Herentals 1542–1616 Antwerp)
The Crucifixion on Mount Calvary,
oil on panel, 68 x 98 cm, framed
Provenance:
Collection of Lady Gerard (according to inscription on the reverse with collector’s wax seal), 1728;
Private collection, Belgium, since the 1970s
The present picture is accompanied by a photo certificate by George Marlier dated 6 April 1967 describing the panel as an ‘original and certain work of Frans Francken the Elder, distinguished from the Crucifixion (compositions) of his son Frans Francken the Younger by the several elements and motifs which remain attached to the art of Pieter Brueghel the Elder’. Marlier notes the Brueghelian grouping of the boisterous figures hauling up the cross to the right. He also remarks that the tonality of the sky with its greens and pinks are redolent of Brueghel’s Storm at Sea, conserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
