WOMAN’S CHORUS COSTUME (»MADAMA BUTTERFLY« - GIACOMO PUCCINI)

WOMAN’S CHORUS COSTUME (»MADAMA BUTTERFLY« - GIACOMO PUCCINI) - Costume Treasures of the Vienna State Opera

Director: Josef Gielen
Costume Designer: Tsugouharu Foujita
Premiere: September 19, 1957
Size: EU 38-42*
Foujita paid particular attention to the kimonos of the numerous friends and relatives of Cio-Cio-San, who accompany the title heroine in the first act of the opera: the colorful, varied appearances created scenically a lush, colorful wave on the stage. Each individual piece consists of an undershirt, the matching wrap skirt, the actual kimono including obi, and a matching fan.
Due to their frequent use - the opera was almost continuously in the repertoire - all the costumes had to be replaced by new, identical copies in 2006, which restored their original freshness, color and quality. A special feature about this costume: every single piece was made in Japan by selected masters from original Japanese kimono fabrics.
The costume consists of a jubon (undershirt), wrap skirt, kimono, obi (belt) and fan.
*As the costume was made to measure for the singer, it may differ from the standard size.
